Challenges to India's Foreign Policy in the New Era
Synopsis
India’s foreign policy is not only facing the challenge of securing peaceful atmosphere in the subcontinent but also achieving satisfactory economic growth, curbing terrorism, promoting peace and human security as well as to evolve a right strategy to deal with the US the only superpower, Pakistan, China and the other Asian states in the new era. India also aspires to play an important role in the world bodies like the UN through becoming a permanent member of the Security Council but the support from the US is still needed to fulfill this long cherished dream. The challenges are many but the strategies for confronting these challenges are limited because with the disintegration of the Soviet Union, India’s strategy of Non-alignment and close relations with the Soviet Union has lost much of its relevance. More so due to internal problems, (growing poverty, corruption, and poor infrastructure) and security challenges from Pakistan, India in place of playing the global role has to confine itself in the South Asia region only. Thus, India’s desire of playing a leading role in the global politics bas yet to be fulfilled because of the above challenges. The present volume, which consists of some important contributions on the various challenges being faced by India’s foreign policy in the new era, would be helpful in improving the understanding of the problems as well as the possible strategies and prove useful for scholars, students, common man and foreign policy makers of India.
