Synopsis
The present study British Rule in India by eminent historian PE Roberts in two volumes deals with the British administration in India during 1600-1947, both by the Company and the Crown. In fact same British traders and merchants entered into India through sea routes during early years of 17th century when the East India Company was founded in England to trade with India. The first volume begins with the brief introduction of the physical and geographical features of the land besides India’s early political history ad describes elaborately the trade activities of the Company, which in due course of time became settlers and colonialists and expansionist in Indian soil till 1`857. The first phase of the British Rule in India came to an end in 19858 and a new era of direct control of British Crown began with the proclamation by the Governor General Lord canning on Nov. 1, 1888. The second volume describes in detail how the British as Colonial power ruled over India and dealt with the emerging problems exactly for nine decades after Queens proclamation of 1858 till the transfer of power and India’s independence on 15 August, 1947. This study is a valuable historical document of British Rule in India under the east India Company (1600-1857) and the Crown (1858-1947) based on authentic factual data of a Colonial power.
