Synopsis The book entitled “Folk-Medicine and Aromatic Plants of Uttaranchal” is an account of folk medicinal plants used in human and animal healthcare in Uttaranchal. The main text deals with 1338 ethnomedicinal plants and 364 ethnoveterinary plants followed by diversity of MAPs, available in Uttaranchal used in Indian system of Medicines (ISM), biologically active MAPs, rare and threatened MAPs, ethno-medico-zoological wisdom and alternative systems of therapies prevailing in Uttaranchal. In addition the book includes nine appendices pertaining to patenting, medicinal plant gardens and nurseries, cultivated MAPs, herbalists, ethnobotanists, glossary of medicinal terms. Indices of botanical names, zoological names and vernacular/local names have also been provided. This book will act as a ready reckoner for academicians, policy makers, researchers, Ayurvedic physicians and general readers.

About the authors

H.C. Pande

Dr. H.C. Pande, Scientist ‘C’ Botanical Survey of India (NC), Dehra Dun, obtained Ph.D. from Kumaon University, Nainital. Later for post doctoral work, he joined National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow. Prior to his present assignment at B.S.I., Dehra Dun, he has worked in Central National Herbarium (CAL), Howrah. Dr. Pande has more than forty research papers and two books to his credit. He has been also the recipient of the prestigious “Professor S.S. Bir Medal” for the year 2002.

P.C. Pande

Dr. P.C. Pande, M.Sc. (Bombay), Ph.D., F.I.F.S., F.B.S., F.E.S., presently Reader in Botany, Kumaon University, S.S.J. Campus, Almora. Dr. Pande obtained his Ph.D. on “Flora of Almora District” in 1985. Since then he is actively involved in researches of various fields of botany, viz., taxonomy, Ethnobotany, Ecology and IPRs. He has published more than 80 research research papers and is author and editor to 4 books. He is currently engaged on research of Traditional knowledge system of Medicinal plants of Uttaranchal.

Lalit Tiwari

Shri Lalit Tiwari (born February 21, 1980) did his M.Sc. in botany in 2001. He was the member of Lok Vigyan Kendra, Almora for one year where he organized a national seminar on “Traditional Knowledge System”. During 2002 he worked in a project on “Traditional Knowledge System of Uttaranchal Himalaya” which was sponsored by Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi. He is the member of several societies concerned with Traditional Knowledge System and Ethnobotany. His main field of interest is “Veterinary Medicinal Plants of Uttaranchal Himalayas”. He has extensively traveled remote areas of Uttaranchal Himalaya and is devoted to record the traditional veterinary knowledge of indigenous people. Presently, he is working in Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia Laboratory Ghaziabad.
