Immediately after the liberation of Bangladesh; the nascent state was faced with serious internal as well as external problems which seemed to threaten its very survival. Internal, the reconstruction of the war damaged economy, the resettlement of nearly ten millions of its inhabitants who have taken nearly ten millions of its inhabitants who have taken shelter in India, and the maintenance of law and order were uphill tasks. Externally, Bangladesh posed a puzzling question of legitimacy and identity for contemporary state-system owing to unconventional nature of its birth.
