Synopsis It is needless the emphasise the signal importance of constitution in the present day world. The desire of the people to be ruled by a system of law rather than the whims and caprices of a man or an organised group has added further significance to the study and understanding of various constitutional systems. In this volume3, a detailed analysis of the government and politics of five different political systems viz., Great Britain, U.S.A., Switzerland, the Peoples Republic of China and Japan, has been made. Each political system discussed in this book makes an interesting and instructive study. An effort has been made to present a critical and comparative assessment of the various political systems with a view to develop the right perspective for the dispassionate understanding of the actual working of the respective constitutional systems. The British and the American constitutions set the two fundamental models of Parliamentary and Presidential system of democracy. The British constitution is considered the mother of all constitutions as it has inspired most of the democratic constitutions of the world. The principles of federalism, Judicial Supremacy and Fundamental Rights owe their origin to the American Constitution, The Swiss Constitution is the example of the only Direct Democracy in the world. The Chinese Communist system finds a prominent place in the book. Based upon the erstwhile model of the Soviet Union with principles of one party dictatorship and centralization of power, it has also adopted several special features. Japan is the other Asian giant whose political system deserves to be studied. Its parliamentary democracy, Limited Monarchy and renunciation of war give it a special status among the constitutional systems of the world.
