A.D. Hope: Merging Meridians: Poetic Vision
Synopsis
In recent years, Australian Literature has found readership in India and emerged as a focus of research and study in Indian Universities. Moving away from the oft-ploughed fields of British and American literatures, Oz Lit is now the buzzword, with University departments across the sub continent introducing courses in Australian studies. Australian literature is now part of the curriculum in many Indian Universities either as a whole paper devoted to its study or as a part of Commonwealth or New Literatures Studies. The Universities of Madras, Delhi, JNU, IGNOU and Rajasthan to name a few all run courses of Australia-related writings. A.D. Hope has been a major poet of Australia and part of the great growth of the country’s literature. He was, in fact, in large measure responsible for creating interest in Australian studies within Australia itself. Spanning as he did, a major portion of the 20th century, his work reflects a uniquely modern sensibility and a critique of Australian society, its mores and attitudes. This book attempts to show how Hope has merged the parallel meridians of the Augustan and Romantic strains in his creative vision, to pick out and identify these two apparently contradictory attitudes and see how Hope has achieved a smooth synthesis of both. To that end has been included a brief look at the history of Australian literature, in order to place Hope’s writing in a proper perspective. There has also been an attempt to avoid overly theoretical discussions or ‘profound’ lines of reasoning for it is hoped that this book will be found useful by students in college and universities apart from researchers in the field.
