Social and Human Well-Being: Selected Perspectives
Synopsis
Accomplishment of higher economic growth rate amidst poverty, illiteracy, ill-health and similar other socio-human problems may be the pursuit pf a computable number of elites and erudites but has little meaning to a vast majority of common people who are struggling from the dawn to the dusk for a sustainable livelihood. Economic equality and justice and bereft of equal opportunity would be confined to the academic interest only. The benefits of development must reach to the poorest of the poor irrespective of caste, religion and ethnicity; must be shared and not to be concentrated in the hands of a few elites, skilled human being and creamy layer of the stratified society. Further, true development must pay attention to the well-being of the disadvantaged and adversely affected such as disabled, elderly, displaced and disaster ravaged and better deal for children, women and youth. Moreover, it must effectively tackle the growth of population, casteism, communalism and terrorism and take adequate measures for the eradication of poverty, illiteracy, ill-health, insanitation and other social and human problems from its landscape. No doubt, since independence, India has been made substantial progress in all fronts, but still she has to walk a mile in order to achieve the goals of “Total Development: Economic, Social and Human†and “Social and Human Well-Being for Allâ€. The challenges are more challenging in social and human sector. The present book deliberates challenges of social development and human well-being.
