Major Trends in English Literature (1837-1945)
Synopsis
The Book Cover two Important Periods of English Literature : Victorian and Modern. It seeks to highlight those literary trends in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries which emerged against the background of the prevailing culture, ideology and thought. The Realism movement is considered only one of the numerous branches of the tree of Victorian literature. When we need to do for a more comprehensive view of the literature of the Victorian age is to identify Realism with the very tree of that literature. Just as the dramatic mode dominated all the literary forms in the age of Renaissance, the essay mode in the neo-classical age, the poetic mode in the Romantic period, so did the novel form dominate all the literary forms of the Victorian era. The novel was the outcome, in English literature, of the assertion of Realism. The Complex of movements in poetry , drama and novel of the early years of the twentieth century contain discernible common elements which make a unified impact. Modernism in English literature takes roots at the turn of century, grows during the early years of the new century and matures during the years of World War-I. The "modernism" proper, for most critics, is confined to the period between the two World Wars. We Must look into the various changes, that took place in different fields of knowledge, which caused and compelled the creation of new styles and techniques in English literature during this period. The present volume underlines such changes and relates them to significant trends in the literature of the period.
