Steps Towards Modernization of Agriculture in NEH Region
Synopsis
Northeast-a region of embellished scenic beauty, a panorama of lush green lofty hills, enveloped with clouds, serpentine rivers, zigzag roads, heather covered slopes, fertile valleys, native of orchids, waterfalls, sparkling mountains, and emerald green lakes provides solitude at the first sight. With India’s independence, a number of constitutional and political changes took place that ultimately led to the formation of the seven states abbreviated as S "Seven Sisters". Of late, Sikkim has been made a part of it. The whole area is inhabited by a large number of ethnic groups with diverse socio-economic features, cultural heritage and traditions. The Northeast is characterized by high rainfall and humidity, acidic soils, wide variations in altitude, undulating topography with spread out hills interspersed by fertile plains. Yak, Mithun, Himalayan sheep, fowl and Wild boar provide evidence of the genetic variability in animal resources. The agricultural assets of the area include abundance of water, fertile soils, especially in the plains and rich biological diversity. But at the same time there are specific problems of agriculture in the region, viz, traditional cultivation practices like jhum and bun, chronic devasatation by floods, large-scale degradation of the environment and problems of marketing due to geographical isolation and dearth of transport and communication facilities. ICAR-RC for NEH Region came into existence in 1975. Since then the Institute is endeavouring for improving the production of major crops and livestock through research and extension activities. This volume is basically intended to provide a comprehensive account of agriculture of the NEH region in general and, the research work and findings thereof over the past 25 years in particular.
