Seismotectonic Atlas of India and Its Environs
Synopsis
Seismotectonic Atlas (SEISAT) of India and its Environs is a compilation of multi-thematic data base comprising 43 maps (presented in 42 sheets; SEISAT 35 & 42 presented in a single sheet) of 30 x 40 size covering India and adjacent regions of neighbouring countries on 1 : 1 million scale. To present these maps in uniform shape and size and as effects of earthquakes are felt in adjacent regions as well, international boundaries are not depicted in the maps. Geographical base for all maps have been taken from the International Map Series of the World prepared by Survey of India on Lambert Conformal Conic projection. A simplified tectono-stratigraphic legend based on various maps published by GSI has been prepared and accordingly base map for all sheets compiled over which various geophysical, structural, seismicity and geothermal data relevant to seismotectonics have been superposed. All data compiled are from published sources and no attempt has been made to interpret these data in the perspective of seismotectonics; rather they are presented in the form as in the original source. The basic purpose for presenting such data in a coherent format is to facilitate downstream analysis, interpretation and utilisation of such maps in the framework of earthquake geology, seismotectonics and seismic hazard assessment. Each map in the Atlas is accompanied by a short write up and text figures to describe the various features and data presented. Major sources from where data have been compiled as well as key map indicating the organisation of the serially numbered sheets are indicated in the even pages facing the map. The Atlas format has been chosen because there exists a vast difference in levels of details in the database in respect of different tectonic domains of the Indian subcontinent and it would not have been possible to incorporate these variable data and information in a single map.
