Synopsis The story of Rama has been dominating the Indian religious scene from time immemorial. For the spread of the Ramayana with the masses, the texts composed in the regional languages, particularly in the medieval times, played a great role. The prominent among these have been the Ramacharitamanasa by Tulasidas, Girdhara Ramayana (in Gujarati), Madhava Kandali Ramayana (in Assamese), Krttivasa Ramayana (in Bengali), The Kamba Ramayana (in Tamil), Ranganatha Ramayana (in Telugu), Vichitra Ramayana (in Oriya) and several others. These as well as several other texts in India and abroad, have massively contributed to the spread of Ramayana in several countries of the world. This monumental book Genesis and Evolution of the Rama Katha is the result of the painstaking research work of the author for a number of years and is presented in three volumes. The book contains 258 rare black & white and coloured photographs, painstakingly collected and depicting the Ramayana scenes from the various temples in the country and abroad as also the Persian Ramayana, Urdu Ramayana etc. The present book is encyclopaedic in nature. A sincere attempt has been made to highlight the numerous aspects of Rama and the Ramayana, with reference to various Ramayanas in the country and abroad reflecting the Indian art, thought, literature and culture.
