Combating Bio-Terrorism: With Special Reference to Anthrax Bacteria
Synopsis
The tactical, strategic and ultimate objectives of the terrorist groups are achieved either by conventional or unconventional form of terrorism or violence. Terrorists or terrorist-outfits have now started shifting from conventional to mass destruction violence or unconventional form of terrorism, which includes the use of chemical, nuclear or/and biological weapons, the most heinous type of werfare. The perpetrators of violence seem to have assumed that conventional terrorism would be brought under substantial control in the foreseeable future through increased security and enforcement measures, that is why they probably are shifting to non-conventional form of terrorism. Biological form of terrorism or bio-terrorism uses living organisms to cause disease or death in man, plants or animals. Two most common examples of these agents are Bacillus anthracis and small pox virus. Anthrax is primarily a disease of animals, and man is only secondarily infected. It is caused by Bacillus anthracis, a Gram-positive, aerobic, spore-bearing, rod-shaped organism. The spores of anthrax bacteria are highly resistant to chemical and environmental influence and can survive for years in certain types of soils and animal products e.g. wool and hides. The cutaneous anthrax is more frequent form of the disease then the inhalation type. The given book will certainly prove to be an excellent endeavour towards handling Anthrax-terror which has not only hurt people physically but it has also "infected" the psyche of hapless or innocent citizens of the world.
