Mass Communication and Specific Media Professions
Synopsis
There are two basic reasons of media freedom in a democracy. First to ensure providing unfettered flow of information about public affairs. And secondly press should be a forum for differing opinion and ideas. In recent years there has been much debate about whether these rights to freedom of expression are primarily for individuals or for institutions of mass communication. Legal scholars the courts and the media critics have spoken of the press or media as the necessary representative of the people their trustee or surrogate. First it is power to decide what to report and how it can determine the quality of reportage. Readers and viewers have little capacity to influence much less to control, media performance. Second the very existence of the media serves to give notice to the centers of power that they are being watched and will be held accountable to the people.
