Synopsis
This twelfth Volume in the series Cross-currents of Indian History and Culture. It concentrates on the achievements of the first five decades of Indian freedom. The story starts from 15 August 15, 1947, when India gained freedom and continues till the end of the 1997 when the people celebrated the Golden Jubilee of their Intemperance. The volume is divided into two sections. Section One entitled The Golden Jubilee: An Introspection deals with the success and limitations of our democratic experience. It covers the crucial areas of nation's life and times including political life, economy, infrastructure, science and technology and human development. Section Two called Milestones comprise a chronology of national events till the year of the Golden Jubilee of Independence. It contains capsuled information on all the landmarks in diverse fields like national politics, foreign relations. Armed Forces, Infrastructure, Industry, Finance, Religion, Communications, Transport, Arts, Literature, Sports etc. Some of these historic events have shaped the destiny of the country.
