Synopsis It is recognised that sewage is just not a pollutant but also a potential source of various nutrients as evidenced by the presence of valuable nutrients. Models of aquaculture for treatment of domestic sewage are available, the principle of all models are mainly dilution, oxidation and reduction of suspended solids along with recovery of nutrients in terms of biomass. Sewage fed aquaculture is a low-input and economically viable technology which can be widely practiced in urban areas. Dr. N.M. Chakrabarty is a fishery scientist working with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
