Stalking: In the Himalayas and Northern India
Synopsis
This re-print of Lt. –Col. C.H. Stockley's vintage Indian classic "Stalking in the Himalayas and Northern India", with a foreword by Hari Dang Padma Sri, is more than a work of Shikar Stories. Affirming the compatibility between even the old days of sport-hunting with guns, and the passionate hobby of wildlife and nature photography, it is also a guide by an experienced Naturalist and Outdoorsman, to the art, craft, technique and logistics bandobast to camping and trekking in the wilderness of India for sport, now called 'Adventure Tourism'. Laying aside weapons, and stalking and tracking with camera-in hand with a telephoto lens, is more difficult and equally exciting, and ‘photographic’ Trophies as worthwhile. Getting to know the wild bio-diverse universe with the local wisdom and knowledge of Garhwali or Sherpa HAPs, ‘nimble trackers’ and experienced ghillies; straining breath and nerve and sinew to get close enough with camera for the climax photograph is more challenging, needing far greater patience and understanding. "It is not necessary to kill to enjoy such sport." The book is a virtual meticulous compendium of photographic, traveling and camping equipment and expedition arrangements both in the Mountains and the plains of India. The stalking, whether it climaxes in a short or a picture, is the crux of this instructive book, written in lucid and entertaining style. The illustrations have been updated, with sketches and photographs, while retaining the earlier context and selections. A book of wilderness sport, for adventure in the new Century.
