India's Forests, Forestry and Wildlife
Synopsis
Scientific forestry started in India during early last century when Capt. Watson was appointed as the first ever Conservator of Forests by the then Madras Government. The appointment of Sir Dietrich Brandis as India's first Inspector General of Forests in 1864 helped to give a definite direction to our forestry. We have come a long way since the days when forests were seen merely as a source of revenue. Today their indispensable role in the survival of the human race is well known. Over the last 150 years there has been a major transformation in the forestry perspective of India. This book encompasses the entire gambit of forestry in India, right from the country's forest regions to forest legislation, protection, management, policy, silviculture of trees, wildlife to its economics and trade. The main aim of this work is to prepare a ready reference book on India's forests, forestry and wildlife.
