An Introduction to Coelenterata
Synopsis
The Book is the outgrowth of deep and active interest the authors have had in prawns and prawn fisheries, actively pursued over a few decades. In addition to their own work, they have drawn upon the existing literature in the field and informal discussions with research workers in the areas of their specialisation. The book has been received warmly as an excellent reference book for the students of Fishery Science and research workers, and also as a guide to the prawn culturist. As a result, four editions and several reprint runs of the book had to be brought out. In the present fifth edition, the book has been further enlarged and updated. This edition has undergone a total revision. Most chapters are rewritten, diagrams are redrawn and species are described, based on their most recent international nomenclature. A lot of redundant legends are deleted and new informations added. When the book was written in 1976, the prawn was used to denote the species belonging to marine origin. According to revised nomenclature the marine species are called shrimp and the term prawn is used to describe that of freshwater origin. But in this book, major descriptions are related to shrimp though its name "Prawns and Prawn Fisheries of India" is retained in view of its wide popularity and readership. Prawn and shrimp rank the highest foreign exchange earner among our marine products exports, fetching over 70 percent of the total value. Shrimp also plays a leading role in the economy of many Asian nations as shrimp farming has emerged a major farming activity of the coastal fisherman providing employment, income and food security. Because of these prawn and shrimp fishing potential, the present edition dealing comprehensively with various aspects of prawn and shrimp fishing, would be a novice guide for students, researchers and culturists.
