Synopsis

India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world next only to China. Because of the varied agro-climate conditions in India, a large number of vegetables are grown here. A great deal of research work has been conducted in disciplines of vegetable breeding and production technology which has led to increased vegetable production. The landraces and locally available genotypes have been replaced by various vegetable varieties including hybrids. The latest production technology is becoming popular among the vegetable growers and has led to the increased productivity. The book entitled "Modern Vegetable Varieties and Production Technology" is a compilation of almost all the varieties developed from various SAUs, research centers and private seed companies, their characteristic features and the production technology involved in raising the vegetable crops. The book also contains few introductory chapters regarding the different vegetables grown in India, their area and production, nutritional aspect of vegetables and research done in the field of vegetables till date. Each of these chapters includes the vegetable varieties and production technology of respective crops. This would be helpful to the teachers, scientists, students, extension workers and farmers of this country.

About the author

D K Singh

Dr. D.K. Singh, is a recipient of award from the State Forest Department of Rajasthan for production and protection of plants through scientific techniques and gold medallist from the C.S.A. University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur, U.P., where he did his B.Sc. (Ag. & A.H.) and M.Sc. (Ag) Horticulture in 1988 and 1992 respectively. He obtained his doctorate degree from the G.B. pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttranchal in 1996 on the research entitled “Effect of paclobutrazol on growth and bearing of mango cultivars”. He was awarded senior research fellowship from I.C.A.R., New Delhi. Dr. Singh started his carrier in 1995 as Assistant Agriculture Research Officer (Horticulture) at Government Agriculture Research Statioin, Hanumangarh Town, Rajasthan. Presently he is Assistant Professor, Horticulture at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Anta, Baran under, M.P. University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur. The author has published more than 125 research papers and popular articles in various journals and magazines on various aspects of horticulture besides two bulletins, 5 folders and a pamphlet. He participated in many national and international symposium, workshop and training programme.
