The Pahari Korwas: Socio-Economic Condition and Their Development
Synopsis
This is the first monograph, ever written on the Pahari Korwas, a primitive tribe of Chhattisgarh, found in the north-eastern region of the state. This tribe has been notified and declared as one of the primitive tribes by Govt. of India during the Fifth Five Year Plan, when the strategy/concept of Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) was conceived for the over all development of the Scheduled Tribes and the areas. It is now more than three decades that Pahari Korwas, one of the social groups of Korwa Scheduled Tribe is still living at primitive stage. Isolated by the extensive forests and different terrains, the Pahari Korwas inhabiting this region, have preserved their traditions, custom and material culture, which are in all respect different from the life of those tribes who are leading a settled life. Still, in the primitive stage of their material advancement, this tribe maintains as intimate adjustment with their natural environment, which is of unique interest to an anthropologist. The difficult terrains, which have preserved the identity of the tribe and emphasized their isolation as a deterrent and chief obstacle to the development of the tribe and the region. The monograph is based on intensive field study done by the author and his team and updated time-to-time to highlight in depth the socio-economic, socio-religious and other psycho-socio aspects of their life, right from cradle to graveyard. Further, with the help of the case studies the populations dynamics, physical features material culture, social organization, attitude, prejudice, rumor, dreams and present development scenario have been deeply discussed to highlight their inner life, as well as total life style of the tribe. The tribe is still enjoying poor socio-economic status among the other fellow tribal communities in the region.
