Synopsis Child labour is a complex problem that is basically rooted in poverty; the is unwavering commitment by the government and the people of India to combat it. Success can be achieved only through social engineering on a major scale combined with national economic growth. International policies and actions, therefore, must support and not hamper India's efforts to get rid of child labour. The child labour program in India is national in character involves the Government of India, the governments of the states and the union territories of India, as well as such tripartite for as the Indian Labour Conference and the Standing Labour Committee. A massive national and regional media campaign has been launched to sensitize society against child labour. Funds have been allocated to districts identified as child-labour endemic for surveys to identify child labour and for awareness generation programs among employers, parents and the working children themselves.

Ashok Singh

Ashok Singh born on 2nd July, 1953, obtained his B.Sc. and LLB degrees from Lucknow University.  From his student life he has actively been participating in politics as a member of the Congress Party.  From the very beginning he has taken keen interest in labour problems on national level.  He is President of INTUC (U.P. Branch) and National Vice President, INTUC, Vice Chairman, National Committee on Child Labour, Member Board of Trustees, Employees Provident Fund, M/o Labour, Govt. of India.  He is also President, Indian National Defence Workers Federation, Sr. Vice-President, Indian National Electricity Workers Federation, President, National Sugar Mill Workers Federation etc.  As a prominent INTUC leader he has been invited to represent labour of India at Seoul (S. Korea), Rome, Tokyo, Geneva, Manila, Singapore, Beijing, Istanbul, Kathmandu, Chicago etc. in international conferences and symposiums.  Presently National Vice President, INTUC, 4 Bhai Veer Singh Marg, New Delhi.

S.P. Srivastava

Born in 1962 in Patiala (Punjab) in the family of Scholars and Artists, the author of this book obtained Master’s degree in fine arts in First division and Ph.D. in his field of specialization. Art and Cultural Heritage of Patiala from Rohilkhand University, Bareilly (India). D.Litt work is in progress. His recent publication is Guru Nanak in Indian Painting. He was invited by the International Congress of Asian and African Studies held in September, 1990 in Toronto (Canada) to present a paper on the arts of Patiala. Having recognized his scholastic caliber and achievement, the Royal Asiatic Society of England has elected him a Fellow of the Society. He has been invited by several Universities of America and Europe. Presently, he is associated with the Post Graduate Department of Fine Arts, Government College for Women, Patiala, Punjab, teaching and research. Besides, he specialises in the field of art of architectural photography and that too of the ornaments and miniatures.
