Asian Economic Integration
Synopsis
Economic Integration among Asian countries is getting prominence through various economic cooperation initiatives. While these initiatives, emerged from existing trade pacts, are limited to largely trade in goods and investment flows, some of them do go beyond and attempt to delve into deeper cooperation by way of encompassing issues, such as government regulations, trade facilitation, customs procedures, etc. In the backdrop of increasing tendencies towards regional integration in Asia, the present volume makes a timely attempt to capture the essence and urgency of Asian Economic Integration. The research papers included in this volume attempt to study, in depth, the recent proliferation of regional and bilateral agreements and various nuances of the existing regional agreements amongst Asian countries on the basis of theoretical analysis as well as empirical evidence. Importantly, some of the papers highlight the crucial roles that some of the powerful and faster growing economies like China, Japan, South Korea and India, assume in the whole process of regional integration in Asia. The book raises fundamental questions, such as how far Asian countries are from an effective economic integration; what steps are required to be undertaken for achieving this goal; what kind of learning the Asian countries might have from the EU's experiences regarding the possibility of creating a common currency union; and so on. India, being a crucial player in the region, this volume focuses specifically on India and critically examines diverse issues from an Indian perspective.
