Synopsis In this book the fundamental concepts of environmental studies has been introduced and discussed in a simple manner. The book is strictly in accordance with the model syllabus designed by UGC. The book has been divided into five units. Unit 1 deals with the life support system on our planet. This unit introduces the reader to his environment and the ecosystem. Various types of ecosystem have been considered. Unit 2 is devoted to the natural resources like forest, water, mineral, land, food etc. In unit 3 various aspects of biodiversity (its value, threat, hot spots of bio-diversity etc.) have been discussed. Unit 4 is devoted to environmental pollution including the causes, control of pollution. Pollutants and their types. Toxic effects of various pollutants have also been discussed in this unit. Unit 5 is concerned with the various social issues of global concern. In this unit the global warming, consuminism etc., have been dealt with in details along with other issues. The book will be quite useful to the students of science, commerce, medicines, engineering, pharmacy, law, humanities, management etc. The contents of the book include various topics that form a part of syllabus of various competitive examination and so will be of interest to such students who are taking up some competitive examination. The contents of the book will also be of use to educationists, planners and policy makers.
