Synopsis

The Wanchos in Transition is the story of one of the most primitive tribes - the Wanchos of Arunachal Pradesh, in the North East part of India. They live in the Tirap district of the state. While the world took gigantic steps in the field of science and technology, this part of the world remained quite unaware of it and kept up their life-style. The world did not know them fully and they did not know the world and seemed to have not cared about it. It was towards the end of the fourth quarter of the 20 century that the need for a change was felt among them. Thomas Vattoth SDB lived with them for a decade and recorded his first hand experience. The book brings out the transition of the Wanchos to what they are today.

About the author

Thomas Vattoth SDB

Thomas Vattoth sdb (72), born in Kottayam district of kerala, India, is a member of the Salesian Society of Don Bosco. In 1976, he came in contact with the various tribes of North East India for the first time and their lives fascinated him. With an inborn talent in Photography, he went to Lyons in France in 1978, for a course in Social Communications and in 1979 he went to Turin, Italy to specialize in photography. On his return in 1980, he was appointed the Director of Social Communications for the diocese of Kohima, Nagaland, India. He was also appointed as the secretary of the Social Communications to the North East Bishops' Conference. Since 1996 he has worked among the Wancho tribe in the Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh in the North East part of India. He has had a first hand experience of the customs, traditions, religious beliefs, rituals, practices and life-style of the Wanchos till 2006. This book is the result of a well documented first hand experience of the author with the Wanchos.
