Synopsis The book Dalits a Low Caste of Hinduism origins of caste and of untouchability lie deep in India’s ancient past and the evidence of those origins provided by the archaeological and literary sources now available, is at best circumstantial.  According to Manu, the ancient Indian lawgiver untouchability is the punishment for miscegenation between a member of a high caste and that of a low caste or an outcaste.  Over the past 50 years, one thus expects a great deal of social, economic and cultural change to have taken place among SCs.  However, sociologists and other social scientists need to examine from time to time the extent of change and obstacles to such desired changes.  Some intellectuals and activists are of the view that the term ‘Dalit’ is hostile to the ex-Untouchables of today and this term has no ontological abilities and hermeneutic capacities of its own to help the ex-Untouchables in their total emancipation.  Thus, the category Dalit faces violent rejection both from the Dalits and from the non-Dalits.
