Dowry: The North Indian Perspective
Synopsis
The menace of dowry was generally unknown in early societies where women enjoyed considerable freedom and privilege in the spheres of marriage, family, religion and public life. With time, however, the position of women changed adversely and many bad customs added to her problems. The phenomenon of dowry in modern times reflects a grim change in this customary system. Each year in India thousands of innocent brides are burnt, killed or maimed in the prime of their lives for dowry. To put it simply, dowry contributes significantly to the bride's future whom would she marry, the element of respect and affection she would get in her new home. The consequential stress on the girl's family is only, therefore, a natural sequel and is today far greater than it has ever been. This book studies the menace of dowry as it is and measures its painful effects on our society. It suggests ways and means to eradicate the evil root and branch from our life. The book would be of interest to academics policy planners and of course to those with interest in these concerns.
