Umrao Jan Ada

Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa (Author)
Synopsis Umrao Jan Ada is perhaps one of the most enigmatic and forgotten female figures in South Asian Literature. The question of her existence, her beauty, her scholarly abilities and her poetic gift remain a mystery. The book is an account of Umrao's life as a Lucknawi courtesan, a nautch girl, delivered in first person by Umrao herself, and documented by a close friend. Written more than a hundred years ago, the novel recreates the gracious ambience of old Lucknow and takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the palaces of wealthy nawabs, the hideouts of the colorful vagabonds and the luxurious abodes of the city's courtesans.

Martin Frank (Author of "Ocean of Love") - Thank you for your description of the book! Dec, 12, 2009

Of course, Umrao Jan Ada will remain shrouded in mystery, because... she is the heroine of the NOVEL of the same name. As a writer myself, I believe there is no greater compliment than that the readers forget that they are reading a novel, and not biography or history. Muhammad Hadi Ruswa was a master teller of stories influenced by the great Laknavi oral narrators and the Russian novelists like Tolstoi and Dostoyevski. Sadly, his other books are forgotten, particularly the wonderful "shahzada" which is belongs among the best Indian novels.
