Marriage and Migration: Socio-Economic Implications

Ishita Mukherjee (Author) Samrat Goswami (Author)
Synopsis There have been marriage and migration – two completely different phenomena – in each and every society from time immemorial. Being a social institution, marriage is the legal way that leads to the destiny of family formation for a couple by sharing the life through caring attitude for each other. On the other hand, migration is the search for a better way of living, with better opportunities and satisfaction ultimately for better livelihood. But incidentally, both marriage and migration are profoundly linked to each other. Marriage migration takes place for different social, economic and cultural factors. Traditionally, marriage is the cause of migration for the bride from her patriarchal to the groom’s family. But, in the modern age, it is not the case always. In many of the cases, it has been witnessed that education is the factor for which people migrate from the native country to a foreign country. Then after finding the right partner they tie their knot. Therefore, there exists a two-way causation between marriage and migration. This book is a modest attempt to capture the issues related to marriage migration, the social, economic and cultural factors behind it and the impacts of marriage migration on society. The book has been alienated in two sections. The first section tries to capture the conceptual underpinnings of marriage migration, emphasizing upon factors behind them whereas the second section deals with some regional and cross-border experiences involving marriage and migration.
