Synopsis This book is aimed at evaluating the economic performance of Maharashtra, India, and brings to light the current challenges the state is facing and new opportunities available to the state. Maharashtra has been the main economic powerhouse of India. It is a leading industrial state in India with good infrastructure network. The state large urban population and growing services sector provide opportunities for investment in tourism, information technology, leisure, bio-technology and entertainment industries. The state has also achieved good progress on the human development front.Despite this progress, since the second half of the 90s the state has been witnessing economic decline. This is attributed to the deceleration of industrial and public investment and relative neglect of agriculture. It is hoped that this book will be of great use to the state government, policy-makers, academia and the corporate sector.
