Management of Coastal Resources: An Introduction
Synopsis
India is surrounded on three sides by ocean and has one of the largest coastlines of 7,500 km. The coastal areas have a vast economic potential and attract tourists from all over the world to their beach resorts blessed with unparalleled scenic beauty. The coastal location where land and sea meet happens to be environmentally fragile. The erosion of coastline due to climatic changes and destruction of mangroves have exposed the coastline to the ravages of weather. This has been aggravated by the pollution created by chemical industries, upcoming ports and impact of tourism activities ravaging the coastline. Depletion of coastal resources is a matter of concern and poses an immense challenge to policy makers. The purpose of this book is to create an awareness of management issues in coastal areas for the conservation of coastal resources. The book has been divided into three sections with a total of 14 carefully selected articles highlighting the economic potential of coastal areas. Various issues follow them, like rising sea level which is shifting the shorelines, the coastal processes along the Indian coastline, the ways of preventing pollution of environment all of which can be achieved and the coastal environment can be protected through legal provisions. The final wrap-up is in the form of conservation and management of coastal resources, highlighting the importance of conservation of mangroves, and application of GIS technology for Coastal Zone Management from a hydrographer’s perspective.
