Wetland Conservation and Ecotourism: South Asian Perspective

Debamitra Mitra (Author)
Synopsis Around the world, in different countries, wetlands are common areas of significant biological and economic importance as they are the homeland of a variety of flora and fauna. It is the basis of livelihood for various sections of population, particularly for the subsistence sector. On the other hand, throughout the world, wetland provides recreational benefits to the travellers who want to enjoy nature. Hence, wetlands with huge biological diversity promote tourism. But the overexploitation of natural resources due to excessive economic activities has endangered wetlands. As a consequence, ecotourism in the modern world has become a strategy of conservation to protect wetlands from extinction. The book is a comprehensive study of the correlation between wetlands, biodiversity and conservation. About forty wetlands in South Asia are identified as Ramsar sites that need to be conserved for the economic development of the region. Ecotourism or sustainable tourism is a strategy for conserving the wetlands and protecting the biodiversity of the region. Wetland based ecotourism in South Asia will promote a link between the people and nature, make the users understand and conserve the wetland resources that are important for tourism and add conservational values to the wetlands. The book also discusses how potential ecotourism in different countries of South Asia is being promoted not only to conserve and manage wetlands but also to enhance the socio-economic development of the local communities and hence of the entire region.
