Managing Non-Timber Forest Products: Global Perspectives
Synopsis
Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) represent a sector which remains more or less untapped despite providing interesting opportunities for various regions rich in forest wealth. Of late, however, they have attracted ample attention from various authorities as an element of sustainable development by virtue of their potential role in supporting as well as improving rural livelihoods over and above their contribution to environmental objectives such as biodiversity conservation, etc. Still, attempts at systematically understanding the role of NTFPs in conservation and development is reportedly weak, and it is being realized that certain measures of planning as well as control are necessary for judicial utilization of NTFPs. Extraction of NTFPs is considered ecologically benign and less harsh to forest ecosystem than timber logging. The promotion of such products is advanced to achieve conservation as well as economic development of the rural poor in several countries where forest resource comprises a significant share of national wealth. The book is focused around conservation, management and utilization of NTFPs encompassing both generic aspects such as different forms of NTFPs and the existing desirable as well as replicable practices in different settings. NTFPs also fit into the diversified livelihood strategies adopted by rural households in several important ways. The book is expected to be of use for development professionals, particularly those dealing with community-based action in the areas of livelihood enhancement and natural resource management, policy planners, environmental activists, grassroot level NGO professionals, researchers, including economists, cultural and medical anthropologists and other social scientists.
