Indian English Novel in the Nineties
Synopsis
The Indian novel written in English has gained high visibility in the nineteen nineties—a momentous decade which has ushered in a sort of fictional cornucopia. Not only has it brought to light a crop of young writers whose first and even second novels have bagged highly coveted international prizes and awards but it has also sent the popularity of fiction soaring high. Therefore, it is time to evaluate and interpret the major works of the major writers of this decade. The present volume is perhaps the first step in this direction. The contributors, some of them highly distinguished scholars and critics and foremost advocates of contemporary literature, interrogate here the outstanding works of Arundhati Roy, Amit Chaudhuri, Vikram Chandra, Vikram Seth, Githa Hariharan, Raj Kamal Jha, Pankaj Mishra, Sunny Singh and Salman Rushdie through most appropriate but diverse critical strategies and try to bring out the best in them. The contested site of Indian English, the shape of future literary criticism and the impact of market economy on creativity especially on novel writing has also been revisited.
