A Textbook of Forest Entomology
Synopsis
A tremendous progress has been made in past few decades in the field of agricultural entomology, However, the progress in forest entomology in India is almost equal to none except the work of few researchers like Stebbings. Inspite of several colleges and research institutes on forestry no textbook is available on forest entomology. Therefore, efforts have been made through this contribution, although the task is very difficult, to fulfill the gap and demand of students and teachers. Insect pests, diseases and fire are the three worst enemies of forest. Amongst the above, insects rank first in causing damage. Control of insect pests in forestry is very difficult task. The book contain 22 chapters devoted to description of insect pests with respect to distribution, marks of identification, life cycle, nature of damage, host plants and control measures on highly economically important 20 crops of forest viz, Teak, Deodar, Shisham, Asan Oak, Willow, Walnut, Silverfir, Mahogany, Poplar, Spruce, Pine. Bamboo, Sal, Babul, Subabul, Neem, Satin and others. Since pesticides lead several serious problems to man and environment, more emphasis is given on biological approaches while suggesting the control measures of forest pests. The book is written in simple language and sketches and photographs are relevantly supporting for understanding the various concepts of pests and their management in forests.
