Synopsis According to U.N. Report in 1990, one out of every 10 persons in the world is above the age of 60 years and 55% of these are females because the life expectancy of females in even more than males in most of the countries. In India the number of above 60 years was 10 crores (10%) in 2001 and is expected to go up to 15 crores by 2020. With the increasing life expectancy the country is going to face a state of picture where there will be many aged but not many youngsters to take care of them. The traditional joint family safety nets are also melting and there is nothing to replace them. The increase in urbanization and migration by youth for studies and jobs leave pockets of rural and even urban elderly lonely and forsaken. There is essentiality to keep these points in minds while making plans for the settlement of elderly specially elderly women because their percentage is more and they are more dependent.

Dr. (Mrs.) S. Murty is presently Professor and Head of Economics Department in Vikram University, Ujjain. She has written 16 books on Indian Banking, Advanced Banking, Regionial Disparities inEconoics Development, Changing Indian Economic Order, Structural Transformation of Indian Economy, Money, Inflatiion and Economic Growth, India's International Trade and Rupee Exchange Rate, Financial Sector Reforms and Economic Growth, Economic Reforms and Growth, Economic Growth and Environment, Market Economy and Growth, Multinational Corporation in India, Issues in Indian Economy, Policy Decisiioins for the New World Order. Some Important Issues inIndian Economy, Employment of Women and Child Labour in India. She has published one hundred and fifty papers in various journals, attended several seminars and conferences. Twenty-four research scholars have been awarded Ph.D. under her guidance. Dr. Murty visited the United Kingdom under Young Scientist Exchange Scheme between India and the U.K. She has worked as Academic visitor in London Schools of Economics and Political Science, where she was accorded the status of Academic staff. She has been in Oxford, Cambridge, Lancaster, Leicester and Wales Universities. She has also visited the U.S.A., Italy and West Germany. Dr.Murty's name has been included inmany international directories and biographies. She has publsiehd a project on "Employment Generation by SBI," and is working on a UGC Project on "Status of SC Women". She has also directed a survey on "Child Survival and Safe Motherhood Programme" in Ujjain district sponsored by "World Health Organisation".
