Female Ageing Population: Problems and Prospects
Synopsis
According to U.N. Report in 1990, one out of every 10 persons in the world is above the age of 60 years and 55% of these are females because the life expectancy of females in even more than males in most of the countries. In India the number of above 60 years was 10 crores (10%) in 2001 and is expected to go up to 15 crores by 2020. With the increasing life expectancy the country is going to face a state of picture where there will be many aged but not many youngsters to take care of them. The traditional joint family safety nets are also melting and there is nothing to replace them. The increase in urbanization and migration by youth for studies and jobs leave pockets of rural and even urban elderly lonely and forsaken. There is essentiality to keep these points in minds while making plans for the settlement of elderly specially elderly women because their percentage is more and they are more dependent.
