About the authors

M.L. Dewan

Madan Lal Dewan (Ph.D., Cornell, 1948), a soil scientist and watershed management expert by profession and a veteran Rotarian, has a distinguished career as an international Civil Servant with Food and Agricultural Organization.

A very dedicated social worker, he has been working with and for the people of Uttarakhand and the Himalayas for the last 25 years. Dr. Dewan has done significant work at policy level. He was the Visiting Professor and Coordinator of Himalayan Eco System Programme with Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi and member of The National Land Use and Conservation Board of Government of India, 1984-87. He is the founder of HIMCON. He has given lead to Action Program by students, volunteers, farmers and farm women for tree planting, water harvesting & watershed management program. He has established a centre in Himalayas. People’s Participation and Rejuvenation of Himalayas Environment, Uttaranchal Vision and Action Program  and 15 other books are amongst his published works. He has co-authored with Prof. M.R. Chilana a book “Human Value: A Task for All”. He is President of Mountain India People Forum (MIPF) and also President of Global Warming Reduction Centre (GWRC).

Ashok Kini Hosdurg

Ashok Kini Hosdurg, born in the divine abode of great saints Swamy Nityananda and Swamy Ramdas in Kanhangad, his love towards Mother Earth and all her inhabitants was visible from his unique actions as a child. Graduated from Calicut University, he started his career as an Army Officer in the Indian Army. He served as a soldier of peace in Nagaland, Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka and United Nations Peace Keeping Mission in Angola. He was awarded Sena Medal for distinguished service during Kargil war. He was also awarded Vishisht Seva Medal for his devotion to duty. He was awarded “Distinguished Fellow” by Manipal University for Hospitality. Popularly called as “Divine Colonel” for his spiritual bent of mind, Kini has been giving spiritual counselling to all sections of people since 1998.

He was awarded Sewa Ratna award by Swamijee of Kanchi Kama Koti Pitham for his service to humanity in 2005. He is founder of “SAVE HIMALAYA—SAVE EARTH” mission.

Pradeep Nayak

Pradeep Nayak, a Mathematician by training and an Animation Filmmaker by choice, is in the field of  communication since 1993. He started his career as a cartoonist for the weekly “The Sun”. After a brief stint he joined “The Indian Council of Social Marketing” as a Communication Designer, where he had made significant contributions to various social marketing projects on Primary Health Care. Since 1999 he is involved in making animation films. Based in Mumbai, his organisation “TAMASHA”—a Treasure of Animated and Mannered Shapes.

His collaboration with Dr. M.L. Dewan, an honorary member of the Indian Council of Social Marketing, dates back to 1995. Both share the common interest of their “Love for Himalayas” other than education, healthcare and Human Values for people’s upliftment everywhere with special reference to children, citizens of tomorrow.
