The Feminine Mirrored: Raja Rao, R.K. Narayan, Bhabani Bhattacharya

Sandhya Sharma (Author)
Synopsis Introduction spells out succinctly conceptual framework drawing from Indian mythology, Tantra, Vedanta and Jungian psychology in particular. Rigorous application of this framework is made in the three following chapters confined to two acclaimed novels each of the three writers. Among the Indian English writers Raja Rao is regarded as the greatest thematist of women and their lives and predicaments. In fact he is regarded as the thematist of the feminine principle. His vision of the feminine is derived from Brahminical culture, Indian Vedanta, Upanishads, Puranas and finally culminates in Tantra. He is an innovator who uses myths, legends and folk tales in his stories to achieve a puranic effect. Raja Rao’s Vedantic vision enables him to see all of God’s creation with a Samdrishta sensibility. R. K. Narayan has a wide spectrum from the mundane to the occult/supernatural. In this spectrum he includes various manifestations of the feminine and shows how after having a conscious existential, ethical and spiritual relationship with anima, the male characters try wholly or partially to make a direct relationship with the many hued feminine. Bhabani Bhattacharya’s attitude to women characters is that of respectful and sympathetic criticism. He advocates neither revolutionary change nor the traditional role. Within the dialectics of the traditional and the modern, he, however, upfronts women as Hetaira, as companion, which perhaps stems from his hidden Bengali Tantric heritage on which further explorations should be carried out by prospective scholars. The comparative perspectivization within the interdisciplinary framework perhaps a pointer to the direction the women studies should take. Because studies done from a single perspective as exemplified in trendy feminism has already become a saturated cul-de-sac. The Feminine Mirrored should be of the interest to the feminists, to the students of interdisciplinarity, students of literature in general, psychology and to discerning readers of Raja Rao, R.K. Narayan and Bhabani Bhattacharya.
