Dictionary of Indian Religions: Saints, Gods, Goddesses, Rituals, Festivals, and Yoga Systems

M G Gupta (Author)
Synopsis
The history of twenty – one different civilizations, spanning a period of some nine thousand years, shows that nineteen of these disappeared when the spiritual or religious foundations that sustained them had become corrupt.  Each time a people have lost faith in their religion, their civilization has succumbed to domestic social disintegration, or fallen prey to foreign military invasion and depredation.  The civilization that falls as a result of the loss of faith gets replaced by a new civilization inspired by a different and livelier religion.

This new religion will help us to heal the earth and inspire us to adopt an environmental ethic, and that would inculcate and encourage a balance of masculine and feminine values and traits in society and in individual consciousness.  It would provide a radical therapy for ‘the delirium of civilization’ and it would help us heal our pains (triyataap or threefold affliction).  It would encourage man to discriminate between the real and superficial, between the fleeting and the permanent, the true and the untrue, and it would knock down the materialist props and crutches of man and make him self – reliant.  It would enable us to realize the worth and uniqueness of each and every individual and it would encourage man to love and protect children, respect women and stand by the exploited sections of society.  It would portray a vision of God, the Creator of creators, the God of gods (Khud Khuda) - One who is loving, supportive and accessible.  This religion would generate an authentic sense of community and would become distinguished for its abiding sense of security and faith, its high standard of rectitude, its deep – rooted tolerance, its complete freedom from obscurantism and all forms of prejudice, the spirit of love amongst all men and women, and to further the closely knit fabric of social life.
