Synopsis Coastal tourism is one of the major forms of recreational tourism.  India has very long coastline along the mainland and numerous islands.  It has ample scope to develop coastal tourism.  It has achieved commendable success in Goa and Kovalam regarding beach tourism.  Other coastal States are also changing atmosphere favourable for it.  The main reason behind it is, that in contrary to traditional sight seeing type tourism, it has longer tourist stay and more income.  Our plans and policies are more condusive for developing tourism industry, because it is the largest foreign exchange earning industry.

But every one has to pay for what he gains.  So is the case of coastal tourism in India.  Coastal tourism is not restricted to three ‘S’ of sun, Sand and Surf, but it moves towards fourth ‘S’ of ‘Sex’ very rapidly.  This becomes one of the main attractions of all such destination in any country.  Apart from this, Indian coasts are facing various types of environmental problems, either natural or man-made.  In this book various aspects of coastal environment and their impact on tourism and vice versa have been analysed.
