Anatomy of Mollusca
Synopsis
Molluscs represent one of the largest and most diverse phyla in the entire animal kingdom. Next to the arthropods, they have the most named species in the animal kingdom. Molluscs both extinct and living compromise about 11 per cent of all animal species that have ever evolved during the entire course of earthy history. The diversity of the phylum is shown by the seven known classes, which are represented by the snails, mussels, oysters, clams, squids, octopuses and scallops. Although extremely diverse, the phylum is united by a common ground plan of anatomic and morphologic similarities. The name mollusca is derived from the Latin molluscus, meaning soft.
