The Laloo Phenomenon: Paradoxes of Changing India

K.C. Yadav (Author)
Synopsis Of late, there has been a sort of proliferation of writings on Bihar and Laloo Prasad Yadav. A perusal of this voluminous 'literature' shows, however, that done mostly by the ones for whom black is white and yes is no/and down is up and stop is go as far as Bihar and Laloo Prasad are concerned, it carries highly partial accounts and explanations of things. An assessment from the 'other side' thus becomes imperative to comprehend the truth in its totality. Hence this study. The crux of this study is, in many ways, what is called the common sense of our times- that is, the rise of the marginalized for getting back from the usurpers their legitimate space, right and privileges. It is, as rightly observed by Martin Luther King, Jr., an historical fact that the privileged groups do not relinguish their privileges voluntarily. In Bihar, too, things are very much the same. The vested interest is fighting hard to defeat the forces of change, political, social and economic, led by Laloo Prasad Yadav. Result? The former have succeeded for obvious reasons, in removing Laloo Prasad from chief ministerial gaddi. But they have, despite their best efforts, and the backing of the mightiest in the land and outfits and institutions that matter, not succeeded in coming back to the position that they had been in for long. And perhaps, they will never do, for, the invincible forces of history are with their opponents. This is what this study intends to tell us.
