The Story of Seed: Navdanya and the Struggle for Seed Sovereignty
Synopsis
Read more
Traditionally India’s farmers have been practicing ecologically and economically sustainable agriculture based on mixed cropping with traditional seeds using organic inputs. But with the Green Revolution of the 1960s they were required to use new kinds of seeds developed in experimental farms which were bred to respond to chemical fertilizers.
Founded in 1987, Navdanya—a civil society organisation, has been engaged in offering a resistance to the Green Revolution agricultural practices and presenting an alternative vision. Reflecting this vision, Navdanya has successfully facilitated local groups and communities to take up seed conservation activities all over the country, and has built a peaceful movement for Seed Sovereignty. This book is an absorbing narration of the efforts done by Navdanya for seed conservation in India, illustrated through a number of colour photographs and supported with documentation of several real success stories.
