The Heritage Sites of Gujarat: A Gazetteer
Synopsis
Read more
Human settlements in Gujarat can be traced back to the stone age period (Palaeolithic, Mesolithic) in the valleys of the river Sambarmati, Tapi, Narmada, Mahi and its tributaries. During the protohistoric period i.e. approximately 5000 years from the present Gujarat formed part of the earliest urban cultures with planned cities of the Harappa or Indus civilization which has been studied using archaeological material in the absence of any deciphered written text/data/ Through out the years proceeding this urban culture, during the Mauryas through the Guptas and the Islamic rule, Gujarat has been closely associated to the mainstream politics and culture of the country at large which is clearly visible in the architectural remains.
The state of Gujarat is thus very rich in archaeological heritage and the present book attempts to document this aspect in a concise form. The book consists of a brief history of Gujarat from the Stone Age to the British rule, important monuments and archaeological sites and their importance and exhaustive list of sites from lower Paleolithic to the British times. This is basically a reference book useful to all those interested in the subject. The merit of the work lies in that it provides the interested researcher or curious layman with the salient features of a site, all at one place, thereby saving him hours of search through the profusion of archaeological books that are not necessarily located at one place.
