Energy Resources, Alternative Search and Sustainable Development

S K Singh (Editor) Ors. (Editor)
Synopsis
Sustainability is usually interpreted as a constraint on economic growth, namely non-decreasing welfare. This interpretation is quite a strict criterion, as any temporary decrease in welfare implies unsustainable development. Moreover, representatives from civil society organizations got involved in this discussion very early and they also agreed on the concept of sustainable development as a basis for jopint action. While, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi succeeded in forming powerful national movements, sustainable development is the first global attempt to realize the dream of perfect social integration.

Equity and justice are important for sustainable development. It is multidimensional that includes equity among nations like rich nations, poor nations, developed and developing nations, equity within countries, between regions, social classes, genders, sectors of activities, equity between generations, and equity between economics and ecology and science and spirituality, the environmental regeneration must be such as to lead to an increase in biomass that will both foster environmental stability and contribute to the sustainable livelihood, security of the rural poor, careful industrialization, implying considerable technology transfer from north to south.

Sustainable Development is often illustrated as a utopian concept of total integration referring to at least three different dimensions (targets, territories and time) and of adequate management rules to use limited resources on the grass-roots level for environment friendly and economically sound global development.

The present book includes purely theoretical research papers as well as well-researched case-studies, diagnostic analysis of environmental crisis and also policy prescriptions. Presented in the international Conference on Energy, Environment and Disaster for Sustainable Development held at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi from 11-15 Jan, 2010 jointly organized by Faculty of Management Studies, Department of Geography, BHU and GSMI, Michigon, USA. The papers widely focus mainly on  Concept, Approaches and Dimensions of Sustainable Development as well as Energy Resources and Alternative Search.
