Legends of Indian Cinema: Pen Portraits

Surendra Kumar (Author)
Synopsis After obtaining Master's degree in History from Allahabad University in 1969, Surendra Kumar has been footloose for the last three decades. The nomadic life of an Indian diplomat has offered him a fascinating opportunity of learning about different cultures, traditions, beliefs, likes and dislikes and numerous other things, big and small, which connect us all. He was surprised to know that how powerful the impact of cinema, today, has on our lives. He feels, it is naive to dismiss it's capacity to transmit views, thoughts and value systems across national boundaries. Indian films are one of the strongest links between India and the Indian Diaspora spread in more than 20 countries. They have also generated immense goodwill for our country all over the world. The film bug bit him while studying at the Allahabad University in 1965. Hiring a cycle and paddling to cinema hall 5 km away with friends in chilly nights to see the last show on weekends was the most favorite pastime for him and his close friends. During his postings abroad, he has tried to organize "Indian film weeks" in the capital cities in different countries, such as, Mexico City, Santiago, Hong Kong, Damascus, London, Maputo, Malta and Tripoli.
