Cabbages on the Bloom: Women's Body and Space in the Sub-Continental Fiction, Volume 1

Binod Mishra (Author) Kalpana Purohit (Author)
Synopsis

Cabbages on the Bloom is a collection of articles on sub-continental women writers. The anthology addresses the voices of sub-continental women writers and records the views and analysis of scholars working in different colleges and universities. Divided into two volumes, the book aims at delineating the position of women in the light of several changes making way. The image of women records a marked change during the last decades-from the portrayal of enduring women to conflicting individuals in search of an identity and a space of their own. Women writers not only re-interpret mythology by using new symbols and subverting the canonical versions but also exhibit the panorama of multiculturalism, alienation, displacement of the self and the quest for identity.

As India approached its freedom, the writers, too, shifted their lanterns towards nationalism and heroism. Apart from male writers, the women writers, though, fewer in number, also contributed their mite to the literary corpus of sub continental writings. Kamala Markandaya, Ruth Prawar Jhabwala, Shashi Deshpande, Rama Mehta are some sparkling minds which paved way for the contemporary women writers of the subcontinent. The fire and aggression displayed by writers like Anita Desai, Jhumpa Lahiri, Bapsi Sidhwa, Taslima Nasreen and many Diasporic writers enabled them to qualify for a respectable niche in the world of sub-continental writers.

The present volume comprises articles on the writings of Bharati Mukherjee, Kamala Deshpande, Anita Desai, Nayantara Sahgal Arundhati Roy, Kiran Desai, Bapsi Sidhwa, Monica Ali, and Jhumpa Lahiri etc. The articles selected for both the volumes provide a creative, critical and comparative study to help the budding researchers, literary lovers and acolytes to augment their critical sparks further.
