Applied linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of study that identifies, investigates and provides solutions to language-related real-life problems. As a branch of linguistics it is concerned with practical applications of language studies, with particular focus on the communicative function of language. The main academic fields related to applied linguistics include education and linguistics, while bilingualism, conversation analysis, contrastive linguistics, language pedagogy, translation, etc. are its major branches.
