Pathological Problems of Economic Crop Plants and Their Management
Synopsis
It is believed that growth rate of food production is far behind the potential of technology available and it is also clear that increase of losses in economic crop productivity is due to diseases and pests which offer only possibilities of increasing the actual yields. Therefore, we need to top fuller yield potential of newer varieties which is economically attractive to the farmers yet ecofriendly. Development of a disease is based on the presence of the pathogen and its interaction with the host, environment, element of time, cultivation practices and human activities. Therefore, the most practical approach would remain preventing the pathogen/infections and restricting their spread. Looking to the large number of economic crop plants and still larger number of diseases infecting them. It is not easy to have information through any one source. The present volume is an effort in this direction, wherein a group of specialists have shared their knowledge and experience about the important and common diseases, (including nematode problems) of the economic crop plants. Besides the clinical and IPM aspects, methodological facets such as breeding for resistance, detection of viruses, application of biotechnology in plant disease management, commercialization of tissue culture, etc. have been dealt with. The present volume will serve as a source of information to the researchers, graduate students, technocrats in the field of Plant Pathology, Phytonematology, Phytomorphology, Mycology, Molecular biology, Genetics and and Plant Breeding and Agricultural Science in General and policy makers to formulate strategies for enhancing crop production.
