Over a dozen of analytical papers having a topical focus, as compiled in this edited volume, provide empirical evidences relating to the role of micro finance, SHGs, NGOs and other institutional factors in accelerating rural development in the Indian context. Overall, the volume focuses on contemporary approaches as adopted in the country for poverty alleviation, entrepreneurship development, and social empowerment of women in rural areas. Adopting the case study method, the contributors provide insightful analysis of participatory rural development in India at a regional level, with a higher emphasis on the north east part of the country. Included are a few studies dealing with allied themes such as tribal development through social mobilization, importance of NGO-community interface in rural development, and the impact of public expenditure on economic development of tribals.
