Sociology at the University of Lucknow: The First Half Century (1921-1975)
Sociology at the University of Lucknow is a systematic, historical narrative on the processes of institutionalization of teaching and research in sociology. The book offers a case by case summation, analysis, and appraisal of the writings and contributions of Radhakamal Mukerjee (the founder), D.P. Mukerji, D.N. Majumdar (associates of Mukerjee), and A.K. Saran (the first scholar product of the department). Some of these works were published a century ago and are not easily accessible to scholars and researchers today. The author, a former student and faculty at the University, provides personal insights and perceptions on the orientation and academic approaches of these four pioneers with a selection of their works. He pointedly and critically analyses conceptual and theoretic orientations as well as the substantive sociological concerns of each of the four sociologists. This volume introduces students and scholars to the rich legacy of sociology at the University of Lucknow.
